Do you live in virtuality? Bicycles and Plektrum festval

We have always something interesting going on in Estonia.

At the moment it's festival Plektrum http://www.plektrumfestival.ee/en/.

It takes place once a year in Tallinn and its goal is to present and render meaning to the confluences of people, technology and contemporary culture. Plektrum’s fields of activity include: technology, art, music and education. It is also interested in the processes between those fields and possibilities of using technology socially. This year main topic is “Do you live in virtuality?”

There is severel events, art shows ets, but most important this year they included our love – bicycles.

3 interesting events:

1. Project „Ride a Bicycle!“ (24th September-4th October)
It combines the technology of m-positioning (possing), media art and sustainable thinking in order to demonstrate where bicyclers actually ride in Tallinn and where bicycle roads are needed. By sending an SMS your anonymous route will be recorded on a digital map of Tallinn.

The piece of art that is created from the movement of the bicyclers and resembles a ball of yarn can be seen on video screens in Forum center, Estonian Academy of Arts, Rotermann Quarter and Vabaduse Square – hence you can help create an interactive piece of art where movement works like a brush. Simply use your imagination to draw different shapes in the city space.

As a result of the project they will put together a report which will be presented to the city councillors and planners to create more bicycle roads where they are most needed!

2. A car and bicycle race (1st October,)
On Thursday morning precisely at 8.30 drivers and bicyclers start the race from three different locations in Tallinn in order to get to the finish line in Vabaduse Square without breaking any traffic rules. The race takes place during the morning rush hour and compares the time and effort it takes to get through traffic jams in a car or on a bike. In a later report we will bring out the highlights of the race and pros and cons of both sides.

3. Big gathering of bicycles (3rd October 14:00-16:00)
The Plektrum Festival project „Ride a bicycle“ ends on Saturday, October 3 with a big gathering of bicyclers in Tallinn city center, Vabaduse Square.
The idea is to come together, be seen and leave a mark in the Tallinn everyday life. In order to do that we will place the bicyclers in the square according to a scheme so as to form a huge bicycle sculpture which we will film and photograph from the tower of Jaani Church. The idea of the happening is to be seen and find out how many bicyclers there actually are in the streets of Tallinn. It is also a place to find new friends, show off your bicycle and exchange riding techniques.

2. Jalgrataste ja autode võidusõit (1. Oktoober)

3. Jalgrataste suurkogunemine (3.oktoober 14:00-16:00)

white lady @Haapsalu | valge daam Haapsalus

Haapsalu is old seaside town and there is a legend about white lady. During the full moon nights in August a feamale figure appears on the Baptistery’s circular window built into the southern wall of Haapsalu Dome Church and the same time big White Lady festival is held.

The legend:

In the Middle Ages, during the reign of Oesel-Wiek Bishop, every canon was supposed to lead a chaste and virtuous life according to the rules of the monastery. Access of women to the Episcopal Castle was forbidden by threat of death. However it happened so that one canon and an Estonian girl fell madly in love with each other. As the young people could not stay apart, the canon dressed the girl up as a boy and brought her to the castle to sing in the choir. For long it remained the secret, but one day the deception was discovered. The verdict of the Bishop was harsh: the canon was thrown to the castle’s dungeon to starve to death, while the girl was immured alive in the wall of the Baptistery, then under the construction. Lamenting of the poor woman was heard for several days until she finally silenced. Yet her soul could not find the peace and, as a result, she appears on the Baptistery’s window to grieve for her beloved man already for centuries, and also to prove the immortality of love.

So it was pleasure to see dressed in white cyclist in Haapsalu last weekend :)
